AMD

AMD, standing for Age-Related Macular Degeneration, is the most common cause of visual acuity reduction in individuals over fifty. This condition stems from an accelerated aging of the macula, the central area of the retina, which impairs detailed vision without affecting peripheral vision.

Established risk factors include aging and smoking, with genetic predispositions potentially paving the way for targeted treatments.

The warning signs of AMD are often discreet and can be overlooked, delaying diagnosis:

  • decreased contrast sensitivity
  • reduced visual acuity
  • distortion of straight lines
  • the appearance of a dark spot in the center of the visual field.

There are two progressive forms of AMD:

« Dry » AMD (atrophic):
The more prevalent and slowly evolving type leads to significant vision impairment due to the atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptors. Nutritional supplements can slow its progression. Experimental treatments are currently under evaluation.

« Wet » AMD (exudative):
Less common but more devastating, it is characterized by the growth of new subretinal vessels that damage central vision. Current therapeutic advancements, particularly anti-angiogenic agents administered intravitreally, now allow for the possibility of vision improvement.

Significant progress has been made with the first artificial retina implantations, showing promising results for the future management of AMD.
