Glaucoma: understanding and taking action

Glaucoma is a serious ocular pathology characterized by the progressive degeneration of the optic nerve, often due to abnormally high intraocular pressure. This pressure may result from insufficient elimination of the aqueous humor, an essential liquid for eye health, nourishing the lens and cornea.

Types of glaucoma

  • Open-angle glaucoma: This is the most common variant, evolving slowly and silently, making its early detection crucial.
  • Closed-angle glaucoma: Less frequent but more aggressive, it manifests through acute attacks, often nocturnal, which can cause intense pain and require immediate medical intervention.

It is important to note that glaucoma can progress painlessly, subtly yet rapidly and permanently destroying the optic nerve.

Risk factors
Genetic predisposition plays a role in about 30% of glaucoma cases, but other factors can increase risks, including aging, high myopia, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, and prolonged use of corticosteroids.

Prevention: key to your visual health
Opticiens Platinum remind you that it is imperative to carry out systematic and regular screenings, especially after the age of 40, with an ophthalmologist. These examinations allow for the detection and treatment of the disease at its initial stages, thus preserving your visual health and the quality of your vision.
